Wiig out.

I've been recommended this movie by my Canadian cousin and have to say I have laughed out loud about 4 times during the trailer and seen some other bits and I think this might be potentially hilarious.I would normally avoid any movie called 'Bridesmaids' but I didn't know this was Kristen Wiig, who I have loved since I first Flight of the conchords and eveything i've seen her in since.Wish we got SNL in the UK. And it's produced by Judd Apatow who I absolutely worship(watch this space,I was going to do a piece on JA very soon!).I love this fresh wave of American comedy coming from SNL.I've always liked Adam Sandler,Ben Stiller and that alumni of 90's comedy but the films have always been hit and miss for me.But I have loved everything Apatow has done particularly his own directed.Forty year old virgin is one favorite comedies,it cracks me up seriously.Love Seth Rogen,Paul Rudd,Bill Hader,Martin Starr but mostly Jonah Hill.Him and Jane Lynch steal that film. And
Lesley Mann, who is Apatow's real life wife,is very funny too.
But this film seems to be getting a lot of positive internet buzz so i'm guessing this will offer a lot more than the standard romcom.I love the line about her diary being 'a very sad handwritten book'.

Cotton candy machine

I don't know much about modern art but I have just discovered Tara Mcpherson. Obviously she was discovered a while ago and not by me but I have recently embraced her into my little sheltered world. She is a New York based artist who is well known for her distinctive graphic art style playing on repetitive themes influenced by her childhood. Her art is distinctively feminine and plays on themes of innocence with underlying darker associations.I wish I could get some of her original work!

She is well known for her gig poster designs. And has done them for all the supercool best bands.

I love this type of art.She reminds me a lot of Frank Kozik, who is my absolute favourite contemporary artist. She seems like the yin to his yang.

bad fortunes.

Well i've just spent my food budget for the next week on this.My bad. But I have wanted it for ages and kept taunting myself looking at it an ebay.I'm sure i'll regret it when I again realise a week eating pasta and stale bread is ne fun.
But I think this will be far more tasty in the long run.

In joint second place.

I kept changing round my 4th,3rd and second place position for best tv show of all time which can only lead me to the conclusion that I love them all equally for different reasons. They could all be classed as THE best tv show of all time,if it wasn't for #1. I would consider  all masterpieces. One lasted 5 seasons, another 2 and the other only one.But we all know it's not about quantity but quality. And if we're talking about masterpieces and quality tv then let's kick of with this.

2.) Twin Peaks(1990-91)

I once read that decades are usually defined by historians in retrospect not by the actual dates but by the cultural and social events which defined and changed them.Like the 21century started with 9/11 and that decade ended with say,the first black US president in the white house.
Well it's just occured to me how appropraite this is when applied to pop culture and art. Twin Peaks really did define the start of the 90's,which we all know was Generation X 60's.It brought cult art to the masses and introduced a whole generation of kids to an alternative culture, which in turn eventually lead to music(hello grunge and alt.90's,film(hello Silence of the lambs) and fashion(hello kilts, boots, halfhidden face bobs).Let's face it the 90's were fucking cool. And what's cooler than Twin Peaks?
It seems wrong to put Twin Peaks or David Lynch in second place for anything .Everytime I watch Twin Peaks it absolutely blows me away.I don't use the word genius lightly but in Lynch's case it is only fitting. This show was just so iconic, out of all my top tv it wins hands down in terms of craftmanship and beauty.Just about every single shot is a work of art.You could take a screenshot of any moment in the show and find something beautiful and terrifiying at the same time. You would want to know more.Want to peep and see what's behind the curtain. It creeps into your consciousness whether you want it to or not. From the iconic image of the body wrapped in plastic, the prom queen in the photograph, the lady holding a log to the schoolgirl twisting a cherry stalk with her tongue.Everything in Twin Peaks is timeless. It's hard to believe it was 20 years ago,it could be made now and have exactly the same impact. In hindsight it's quite clear how much it influenced not only my tastes but me as a person. It definitely evoked something in my12 year old self which ever since has been obsessed with small town americana and the shadows and light of humanity. In fact  i've just realised it's probably a huge part of what inspired me to want to be a writer and the kind of material inspired and excited me. Lynch is hands down my favourite director.Don't even get me started on Mullholland drive.I went on a date last year and the guy made the mistake of saying he'd watched it the night before.Really? try watching it 50+ times(I worked at a cinema when it was released). Then try and dissect it with me.He never called, needless to say.
Every time I watch any Lynch film it makes me wish I was an actress. It must be so special to have played one of Lynch's ladies(Naomi Watts. Most criminal oscar robbery ever.Mark Kermode and the dude off of Film 2011 are with me on this...the academy should be forced to write a formal letter of apology and have a lifetime of nightmares about the man behind the wall at Winkies diner).
Anyhoo,by the by,Twin Peaks, a small slice of genius pie.Which will til the end of my days cause arousement at the sight of a douglas fir and make me want to travel smalltown USA on a diner and roudhouse pilgrimage.I haven't even started on Julee Cruise, the travesty of season 2 and my undying love for Sherilynn Fenn.I have aspired  to look like a 'Twin Peaks girl' ever since.I remember swiping my brother's Empire magazine for the famous 'goddess' poster which I had on my wall for years.Oh and my favourite image,or the most memorable has got to be Ronette Pulaski walking across the railroad.Oh okay,i'll do my top 10 Twin Peaks moments.Twist my arm(or bend it back, natch).

Wednesday 18 May 2011

this'll be all shits and giggles i'm sure.

Well i've found another film to get excited about. Lars Von Trier's latest film 'Meloncholia' has been getting rave reviews at Cannes and it looks stunning by the look of the trailer.I love all LVT past films, yes I loved Dogville too.I find it really strange how his films are percieved as misogynistic where as I see them as profound explorations into gender study with feminist interpretations bursting at the seams. My favourite is Antichrist which was possibly my top film of 2009.I really like Charlotte Gainsbourgh, who is also in this new one but i've never been totally convinced by Kirsten Dunst. As much as I love 'Eternal sunshine..' and 'Virgin suicides'.She always just seems to play herself, which isn't a bad thing as such.I've always had a style crush on her though and I always seem to copy her hair. After ESOTSM I started wearing my hair like that and after seeing this trailer i'm thinking short shaggy bob is so 2011.I think I may have just ruined my whole feminist angle there, hmm.Anyhoo will be getting the popcorn extra buttered for this one.

In fifth place.

I think it's about time I made a definitive, documented tribute to my favourite tv shows of all time.I think my top 5 are immovable and it gets a bit harder after that. And there's still yet so many I haven't got around to(Battlestar,Sopranos..).But here are the top 5 tv shows that changed my life and rocked my world.
In descending order.

5.Curb your enthusiasm.(2000-present)

This show makes me laugh so much it hurts. It epitimises everything I love about American comedy and humour. There is nothing less than perfect about this show and it always delivers 100%.I didn't think I would enjoy Larry David at all but it has become my ultimate comedy tv show.I love that really 80's feel to it reminiscent of classic comedy.Every show has been tv gold and too many stand out scenes to start picking them out.I love the ensemble casting and it just goes to show how many under used talents have still got it! I can't wait to rewatch them all again.I think my personal favourite has to be Jeff though. And of course,Susie. In fact I may have to do my top 10 Curb episodes at some point.Oh and I loved David Schwimmer in it.I'd forgot how frickin funny he was.Him and Lisa Kudrow were always the super talent of Friends.

Fondue for two.

Brittany,Lord Tubbington and fondue for two("Shouldn't it be fondue for three?" "No.")
What more can I say? Glee continues to increasingly delight me.Although too many Sue free episodes of late but the rest of the cast are shining brightly their little comedic stars.I mean you Brittany,Santana,Rachel and Kurt. Not you,Mike Chang. And loving Quinn lately too.More Sue,more Becky, more Principal Figgins(I do love a teen show Pricipal, yes Principal Schneider,i'm talking about you "Summers, you drive like a spaz"...still laughing 2011).
Anyhoo,distracted...I have loved S2 Glee more than S1,think it's really got in it's perfect balance now i.e tongue firmly lodged in cheek. When it's at it's best it is probably the best comedy show on.Why don't people see this? Haters. And yet it can reduce me to tears in a heartbeat e.g anything to do with Santana's clandestine sapphic love or anytime Sue remotely shows she has a marshmellow heart underneath all the polyester.
That's one big Mr Shue sized air punch and a 'WHOA' from me.

My person of the day.

I love Gwyneth Paltrow. I feel it needs to be said more often.I don't know much about her as a person except she's mates with Madonna, married to that bloke and whitters on a bit about shite.A bit like me.Well the last bit. She's always struck me as a bit prissy, like a head girl who thinks she's in by hanging round with the cool people. But I think i've been hasty. For a start she's been around forever now,she dumped Brad Pitt when she got famous haha, she's a bloody good actress at times and I think she's stunningly hot aswell but this never seems to get noted. The woman is ageing well.I guess those microbiotic thingys are doing something right.
But mostly because she is a massive J.D Salinger and Donna Tartt fan.Which I like. She has been in Glee.Likelikelike.In which she is equally annoying but hilarious. Also I rewatched Sylvia yesterday and had forgotton what a good film it is.Her performance is stunning, totally believable as Plath, walking the fine line of pretentiously self obsessed genius with the heartbreaking reality of depression.Apparantly Plath's children tried everything to stop the film being made, which is understandable, but I think Gwynnie did her proud.Much better than that Kate Winslet as Iris Murdoch in that bloody bowl wig.

Cold turkey.

I killed my facebook today.I don't know if it'll last or whether i'll cave in and give it the kiss of life before the day is through.I'm gonna try and go a month without though and see if I actually miss it or more to the point how much effect it'll have on my life.I've had my fun with it,good times were had but I feel we've grown apart, want different things.I'm just feeling the urge to get back to basics like the good old days.I'm sick of reading regurgitated shit between people I try and avoid in real life so why do I have to see it in my virtual one? I also hate that people don't bother phoning or texting cus it's just easier to 'facebook' instead which means you have no choice but to be utterly dependant on it.And to be frank when I think of all the regurgitated shit i'm guilty of myself it mortifies me a little inside. It never really hit me how much you're just exposing yourself to all and sundry. At least here I don't have that worry,as I only have one follower(hi Pip).So let's see how it goes,a bit of a social experiment on myself, albeit a crap one.And besides this frees up my time for watching more tv.....

The one.

I have found my dress for the big day.Yes, June 30th.It's white and long and a bit lacy.I honestly didn't think of this consciously when I was bidding furiously on ebay. Now I think it might scare Evan a bit when I am staring up at him on the stage.Whoopsie.

But this is the look i'm hoping to pull off.

This is the look i'll probably rock the socks off though...here's to you Miss Havisham, jesus loves you more than will know, whoa,ho,ho.
